And I’ve already told my kids that they must go into tech, finance, or medicine — otherwise I refuse to pay their college tuition.

This is not an Asian mindset. I'm not Asian and I 100% agree with PP.
I'm not paying for crappy majors. If you want me to pay for college, study something useful.

Not taking more risks and going into education. I left and make a nice six figures, but I wasted a lot of years.

Staying in the courtroom too long. I had lots of fun and have tried a few cool cases, but now I need a job with benefits and am getting nowhere.

Being a teacher. I loved it and it was nice. But, with current conditions, I am over it. And, I am a lucky teacher that jumped the hoops and entered at the right time and pull in $98k/ yr. I wish I had majored in Enviro Science and worked in the field of Ornithology or US Wildlife and Forestry.

I am in school now to become an X-ray tech and gain more certifications for MRI, MRE, Ultrasound, Cat Scan. This will be less stress and it is something I was also interested in earlier in life.

I followed the enviro science path and while things have pretty much worked out for me, it’s not really a path I’d recommend. Competition for new grads is fierce, pay is poor unless you go over to the dark side, and it’s rare to end up with a job that actually gets you outside - or if you get one, pay is REALLY bad and travel is hard with a family.

I work with great mission-driven people in NGOs and government, but it’s hard to get in the door and none of my coworkers are wealthy. Many of my friends from grad school have moved to the tech sector and I often think of doing so

You’re ridiculous to act like putting parameters on what a parent will pay for an ADULT child’s education is equivalent to child abuse. My parents did the same thing (different fields they chose but I went into tech) and it was the best thing they could have done. I plan the same with my kids. A college education is about getting a job. Also, I am not Asian so just stop with the racial profiling.

Also, you don’t need super high grades to go into any of those fields. They are wide open and have people working at all levels.

biggest regret was leaving good consulting firm for GS-15 job. Agency was a total disaster and everything about the job was awful. Suffered for two years and then bailed. Took 4 years to get back to consulting firm salary. It was stupid to go government.

Yeah some careers have zero benefit from a college major, even the degree is just a marker of… well I don’t even know.

In November 2019 I was offered my dream job but it was going to require regular travel to the west coast and I was in the midst of an eldercare crisis and had young kids and a spouse who worked long hours. I did not take the job because of the travel. Had I known we would all have been zooming for two years (and my eldercare responsibilities would also lessen because of COVID visitor restrictions) starting just a few months later, I would have taken the job.

I have had good opportunities since then so on some level it all worked out.

Majoring in English is fine. That’s not what’s holding you back, OP. No one cares what your major was.

In industry (including non profit), accounting is strangely seen as the place to look when trying to cut the budget. Even CEOs with financial background don't seem to value and appreciate the accounting/finance team. It is so frustrating!

Staying too long in my first job or even accepting that position in the first place. It was at a prestigious federal agency but promotions are faster at other departments.
