It’s clear this conversation is pointless. The last couple comments are nothing but overblown, illogical statements that can’t be backed up with proof.
I wish people with these absurdly negative views of our police would attend the citizen’s academy, or at the very least do a ride along. Then we would be able to get something constructive done once there’s a clearer view of policing and safety in Montgomery County.
They didn't fire an officer that called Black people the N-word. That is just one of numerous examples of bad behavior by MCPD officers that is tolerated. You know about these incidents, but you DGAF.
I suppose I need to spell this out for you: of course I “GAF.” I don’t, however, see evidence of “numerous examples of bad behavior” and I chose not to paint large groups of people with one brush. With almost two decades living here, I see a very professional and hard-working force that has been demonized by politicians in recent years.
You are welcome, of course, to insult me and the officers if you think that’ll help make things better for Montgomery County.

The 13% got them to the middle. The 7% is additional to that, impact will depend on what the other jursidictions do. And compensation is not the only factor that drives recruitment and retention.

If you want more officers, reach out to the council. Tell them to treat MCPD better so they can attract more recruits to fill the many vacancies.
They are recruiting just fine with the new bonus, they have said so themselves. We'll see of the recruits are any good, I'm doubtful. MCPD refuses to do their jobs because 2 out of 11 councilmembers are critical of them which does not inspire a lot of confidence. I don't think the problem is the council, that is a lame excuse. If an org can't attract people it's more likely a problem inside the org.
I think I’ve seen you here before…
Are you the poster who refuses to see the impact anti-police vitriol can have on a department?
We are living that reality right now. Yes, recruitment is up because they advertised a $20K bonus, just like other departments in the region have been doing for a while now. Numbers STILL aren’t where they should be because there is a stigma against this county.
And I've seen you here before too.
They literally gave a councilmember an award for being a "public safety advucare". You can't name more than 2 out if 11 sitting councilmembers' that are even remotely critical of police.
And it has been clearly explained to you that the damage was done with the previous council, of which several were decidedly anti-police. It’s the current council that has a member who has referred to officers as “thugs” and “goons.” She has also called (angrily and repeatedly) for defunding, and she’s currently on the Public Safety Committee. That’s hardly encouraging.
I would discourage anyone I knew from seeking employment in a city with leaders describing policemen as goons and thugs. There are many other locales with leaders who praise the efforts of their police dept.
If the damage is done then it can't be fixed. Why invest resources into something that is irreparably broken? I am not sure what it is you all want since it appears there is nothing the council can do to make it better, besides never criticizing police or passing laws police don't like. How far down do you have to scroll down Mink's Twitter to fine the thugs and goons comment? You are really looking for things to be angry about and as long as you are doing that you will always find something, no matter how long ago it was or whether those people are still in office.
Hyperbole never makes a strong argument. There’s a ton of room between “damage is done” and “can’t be fixed.” There’s also a ton the council can do to make it better, and nobody (seriously… nobody) has suggested “never criticizing police or passing laws police don’t like.” Again, hyperbole doesn’t help. If we want solutions, we need reasonable thinking. What do I want? Well, I’d love to hear an acknowledgment from Mink about her anti-police tweets, something that can make us feel a bit better about her placement on the Public Safety Committee. That would be a good-faith step the council could do.
As for how much time it took for me to find those comments: about 20 seconds. If you search her Twitter feed for the word “police,” you get 15-20 references to defunding and a ton of insults, most of them in the past 2 years.
Mink ran on a defund the police platform. She believes in what she said. If MCPD cannot function because of one Councilmember's tweets that is truly pathetic. You are not doing them any favors by suggesting they cannot handle the discourse. Police won't even fire officers that use the N-word. You have stunningly low expectations for them.
Again with the hyperbole! Where have I displayed “stunningly low expectations”? Where have I said “MCPD cannot function because of one Councilmember’s tweets”? Where did I suggest “they cannot handle the discourse.” For that matter, when has anybody in this thread said any of those things? As for your reference for firing an officer for horrid language, are you aware that the majority of complaints actually come from fellow officers? How does that suggest anything other than a culture of high expectations, when officers themselves call out their coworkers?
This is the problem when you mention policing to somebody who exclusively operates in an anti-police realm, which I’m beginning to guess is you. The bottom line is the police can do nothing right, and therefore it’s acceptable (encouraged?) to disparage them at every chance.

The damage can be fixed, if political leaders begin to support and invest in police. But I figure it will take about 10 years to get back to where they were pre-George Floyd.
In the mean time, people of means will just have to divert some additional resources to creating their own safety and not rely on police as much. Buy your safe cars, don't commute by public transportation, put your kids in private schools, live in a lower crime area, put up security cameras/alarms, etc. Stuff lower income people can't do as easily. They are the ones who suffer most without police.
