If you are going to have Visi on the list, Gonzaga should be on it. Most Catholics consider them in the same tier academically and prestige wise.

There ought to be multiple lists because there are different populations in the area that see these schools differently.

The great majority of Catholics that send their kids to non-public schools consider only the Catholic schools. So GDS, SFS, Maret, etc. wouldn’t be on their list as schools they would even consider applying to.

Then there’s the issue of geography.

YES! We would never consider these schools for our kids bc we believe in Catholic education. Everyone has their own reasons for picking schools. Not everyone wants the same three schools.

I bet that plenty of people have heard of Prep and the fondness of certain of its graduates for beer and non-consensual activities.

In California, I heard about St Albans (but not Beauvoir or NCS), Madeira (as a boarding school), Sidwell, SSSAS, St Anselms, and Potomac in sentences with phrases like “good private in metro DC”. Now, I never thought it was a complete list, nor did I think those necessarily were “best”, nor did anyone out there claim those were best. But those did have some brand recognition in SJC/SFO at a tech company… Smartest guy I worked with there had gone to St Anselms (and hated the social experience while conceding it was a good education).

No idea why NCS & Beauvoir did not come up. Was told StAlbans & St Anselms were boys school and Madeira was a girls school.

I think “known outside DC” has a huge amount of randomness in practice. I also think substance and brand recognition often do not correlate well. So maybe an entertaining discussion, but probably not really useful insight into where one’s own DC will thrive…
