Agree! My kid started flying alone at 5. 14 is plenty old enough to go thru security. 14 year olds are married and have babies in some parts of the world. Others go off to boarding school alone. Sheesh!

The fact that other kids have sad childhoods is not a reason for OP to send the kid by herself through security

I flew with my teenager and a friend of hers who does not have Precheck a month ago. We all waited in the regular security line together. It would have felt wrong to send her to the regular line on her own, or even with my daughter. Particularly since we were departing from Dulles and Precheck has a completely different entrance/location -- and our return trip had the same dynamic. But I think I would have made the same decision at DCA or BWI.

I don't know whether you would experience inconvenience, a complete hassle, embarrassment or something else given your medical issue, so can't really advise what I would do in your shoes. But that's the decision I made in our circumstances.

My guess would be that the TSA people have a lot of discretion over how they manage the lines. The hard part is figuring out how to ask for discretion.

Not PP, but it's basic courtesy. If I'm the adult in charge of a minor guest, I do not leave them to deal with an unfamiliar line in an airport. If I can't accompany them, I get someone else to do so: my own kid.

It's a point of etiquette.

I MIGHT decide it is fine to send my own 14 year old alone in the airport but I can’t fathom taking responsibility for someone else’s and then sending them off alone without their parent ok’ing it. It’s not like they are walking down the airport hall to grab a bite - it’s the most important step of the airport process.

If the girls parent trusts OP to take their daughter on a trip, she is trusting her to make certain decisions. However they do it they will never even be out of each others site. It is less risky (to me) then sending friend to the restroom alone. I am not sure what the risk is? Friend forgot about a water bottle and has to talk to TSA person. 14 year old can do that.

Adding that I think OPs DD would be happy to accompany friend to regular line if it avoided discussing some kind of medical condition that embarasses her mom.

Have your DD and the friend flown frequently before? Are they familiar with going through TSA?

If so, send your daughter and friend together, just b/c it's boring to wait in line alone. I have 12 year olds, and we have flown a ton, and I would have no issue with them going through security alone while I waited on the other side if it was necessary.

If they haven't flown a lot, then you all go through regular security together.
