Mary Washington - kid was rejected from every other VA school he applied to - was NOT excited at all by UMW but now loves it


Loved my time at Mary Washington and it prepared me very well for grad school (at Va Tech). I would not have been ready for a school the size of Tech when I was 18. I’m still very close to friends from my Mary Wash days.

I think it has a 66% acceptance rate? (At least that is what Google tells me). Regardless, DC is happy there!

Low GPA/SAT is entirely subjective. 1350 might be low for one kid, 1000 for another.

These are friends' kids

Not a safety. Anyone who lives in MD wants to go their b/c of the tuition. Highly selective just because of the number of applicants.


Safety is relative. And, if you have really high stats, you should be good at UMD (EA of course). It was a safety for my kid last year. 4.83W, 1570 SAT, lots of honors, ECs.

But, I agree generally that UMD is not a safety school. It just might fill that slot for some kids, though.

+1 High numbers, but no ECs to speak of. Loved Elon and graduated at the top of the class. Now in med school.
