Years ago an unhomed man we knew (he frequented the neighborhood), clearly in a disrupted mental state, tried to push his way into the house as I came home from work. I got the door closed and deadbolted, and he proceeded to pound on it for several minutes while I stood by the back door trying to decide between calling the police (potentially dangerous for this individual) and just running out the back door if he got in.

With a glass door, it would not have been as strong + he would have seen me the whole time

This is the OP. We ended up ordering a solid door but with sidelites. I LOVE the look of the glass front doors but I like to be able to “hide” behind my front door when someone is there who I don’t want to open the door for. I really do think they are gorgeous though!

No, it's 'not obvious' no one is home. It just means you aren't seeing who is home. They might be in the basemnet doing laundry, or reading a book in a bedroom, or in the den wtaching Tv...

We have side lights but them have to cover them with custom sized treatments. Would never want glass on front door. I don’t want strangers and solicitors looking in or compelling us to answer the door.

We have them in a new build townhouse. Just got a quote to put shutters on them for $700 for each door.

Hate them not sure why anyone would want a see through from door it's totally bizzare.

We have beaded glass

We've got a split foyer and expanded it when we did renovations years ago. We have a glass front door and side windows. I like the large amount of light that comes in and while someone on the sidewalk can look in, they're pretty much only seeing the stairs and, if someone is walking on the main floor, stocking feet.

The front door glass needed to be cleaned weekly when the kids were small and when we had a larger dog (fingerprints and nose prints). Now, it's no more than every 6-8 weeks. I've never felt unsafe and don't worry about someone breaking the glass as it's really solid and would be tough to break - not impossible but not as easy plain old glass.

We may be a different sort: Our front door--which looks into our open-floor plan house--is 2/3 glass. And the door is right next to floor-to-ceiling windows that also look into the first floor of our house.

When we moved in, we considered getting some form of window treatment. But 1.5 years later, we never did and we have no need. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac without too much traffic. And nothing all that exciting happens on the first floor.

But we LOVE having the huge amount of light pour into our house. It's so bright, airy, and open.

We had them at our old house. Loved them.

We are considering glass doors. Does anyone care to share their favourites? Perhaps 1/2 to 3/4 glass including sidelights

Our neighbors across the street have them and they have kind of a swirly glass so that you can't really see though. It's really pretty, but I don't think I'd want glass doors for myself.

I hate them. Hate sidelights and anything you need to cover the glass. Never looks good.
