I know Black Hill and it is busy. I would not venture on a secluded path alone or with fewer than 3 in my group. Predators count on women to have their guards down, which mine definitely is in the woods. This is why I hike in groups or with my dh and I avoid secluded paths.

Please just keep in mind that any weapon you hold can be taken away and used on you.

Yep. I live in an apartment building and will let the door fall in someone's face unless they're one of the two people I recognize as living there. It goes against instinct, but is super important.

I rarely do anything alone already. I no predators are opportunists, always looking for someone to victimize. In the case of this young lady, she was armed, in a sense: she is strong, she felt no fear, she fought him and ran off asap. I don't know that she has to learn anything, except that she can, in fact, protect herself.

I spend time alone at home and at busy public places. I'd rather remain alive and not get robbed, attacked, raped, etc than be alone on the street, in a room with no exit, on a path, in the woods, etc etc. There is safety in numbers and I employ common sense tactics ahead of the (theoretical) right to move about the world safely and unmolested. Alas, that is not the workd we live in.

Why do you think she buzzed him in?


The video show her going over to the door and letting him in.

Women need to stop being nice. Nice gets you killed. If he lived in her complex then he can go back to his apartment to get his access card.

Now obviously women deserve to workout, walk, run and do a million other things without getting attacked, but that is not the world we live in.

Our landlord at work owns all the building on each side of a four block stretch. They are opening a free gym to employees, similar to the one in the video. When asked by a coworker if I was going to use it, I said no, I'm not going to a random, unmanned gym by myself. He called me a gym snob. I guess I am, but I'm also not going to put myself in strange situations where I'm on my own. I'll stick to my current gym that is busy and has plenty of employees to assist if something goes wrong.

What does that have to do with what happened? She may have vaguely recognized him as a neighbor. It just takes a split second to decide to open the door for a neighbor. Does that mean she deserved to get attacked in her building's gym?

I am probably the only one but he looked normal to me. I would have stupidly let him in too. The guys that make me naturally on guard and suspicious by appearance alone are those who look extremely fit, red faced or angry. At a gym that would probably be the guy there to just work out!
