This is the unfortunate part of military life. I did it, and things definitely got more lonely in the final stretch to retirement.

I’d start looking for opportunities to engage inside the civilian community. Book clubs, yoga classes, whatever. You need a network without a power dynamic.

Maybe it truly was a space thing. But it seemed like such odd timing.

It can be difficult being the boss's spouse. I imagine especially so in military life. Do you have ways to interact more in civilian circles?

But it makes no sense that the boss was invited and now the employee is willing to piss off the boss by uninviting his wife and kids-it would be more understandable if this was going to be a a wild adults only night, but who is going to go to the trouble of uninviting a mom and kids to a family party.

That's incredibly rude of the host. But then again, why would you want to hang out with someone who is that awful? Sounds like you need to make nicer friends that are not connected to his workplace.

I wonder too. It seems weird! But maybe it's somehow known the OP doesn't care about football or the Super Bowl (by her own admission) and the host just wants people who are there for the betting, the game specifics and so forth. It's like someone coming to an Academy Awards party who's not interested in movies and is just there to drink, eat, and talk loudly.
