Segregation has historically been associated with the Jim Crow laws of the South. But the report finds that, in the 2020-21 school year, the highest percentage of schools serving a predominantly single-race/ethnicity student population – whether mostly white, mostly Hispanic or mostly Black etc. – were in the Northeast and the Midwest.

DP. There's nothing in that actual study that contradicts what pp said. There's a nice chart on p. 17 that shows that Southern schools are more integrated than the national average, and much more so than Midwestern or Northeastern schools.

It is amusing to hear people from DC talk about rich people not wanting their kids in schools with poor kids. I mean, unless, you want to take the view that this is something they know first hand? The highest private school enrollment rate in the country as a % of school age population is DC, and it's not even close. DC is 28%, Wisconsin is second at 17% and Mississippi is about halfway down the list at 9%. Louisiana is the only southern state in the top 15 (at 16%), and I suspect that's the result of a large Catholic population. FWIW, that DC number doesn't include charter schools, which are counted separately.

If I lived in DC (or even Maryland) I wouldn't be throwing stones at Mississippi's educational system. DC state scores from 2022 are only rescued from being #52 by Puerto Rico and New Mexico. All of the Southern states have moved up considerably. MS scores for 4th grade math are 1 point off the national average while MD is 5 points below and DC is 11 points below. Alabama does better than MD. VA is 1 point better than the national average, so not a lot to brag about there, either. MS is a point above the national average for 4th grade reading, while DC and MD are 9 and 4 points below, respectively.
