Will you object to a psychiatric institution being built in your neighborhood?

If the choice is between tent city and an institution, I know which one I'm picking.

Or they just pay for the phone with their begging proceeds. Some have nice androids and burn through the data binge watching Breaking Bad on Neflix.

how would you know this??

I was walking down the street in Manhattan and my teenage son pointed it out to me. He wanted to know why a homeless dude would have a much better cell phone than his dad

I hope you told him that’s because nobody cares to treat mentally ill even if they say they don’t want treatment (they don’t have the sound judgment to decide).

Yes, they should just lock them up in boxes like they used to. Out of sight, out of mind.

That is actually way better than the current model though.

Anonymous wrote:This affects refugees too - it was the situation the Antetokounmpo family faced as depicted in the movie Rise.

Unlike in the movies, most refugees have an already established community from their country already in the US. They help with leads and let them use their address, at a minimum.

This particular movie was based on REAL people- NBA players.

This is also a problem when you move countries.

You can't get a bank account without an address but you can't rent a place without a bank account. You need an address for a tax number, a tax number for a bank account, a bank account for an address and so it goes around and around in circles.

Homeless people do use a family members address. My brother used mine and my mom's.

The unhomed generally get shipped to regions that offer services, but which the people shipping their homeless grossly overestimate what resources exist in those regions.

FIFY

Maybe that should be the plan - for DC to continue to offer services, but that those services and affordable are operated in a much cheaper community in a warmer climate, like in South Carolina or elsewhere.

DCs plan is to offer free 24 hour bus service on specific bus lines that terminate in Maryland.

As opposed to telling him that's because people buy phones for the homeless so that they can get in touch with their dealers faster.

Anonymous wrote:I don't get why DC is such a magnet for the homeless. I suspect red states and red counties round up a lot of their own homeless and dump them on DC as some kind of "statement" the way Abbot does with migrants. But it's stupid, because everything costs so much more in DC - real estate costs, labor costs, etc.

Perhaps a better plan would be for DC to buy land and build facilities in a much affordable community like Charlotte or Hickory NC, or Huntsville or any number of other places, and move them there to care for, and they could do it for a third of the cost of trying to care for the homeless in DC. And, it would make it a lot easier to transition them out to independent living there as well.

We've already heard that many of the homeless don't have family here in DC - and many of them aren't originally from DC. What's to keep them here?

Same reason they are homeless: inertia. Get somewhere, stake out a place, learn who has the best free food, find a drug source, figure out where to pee and poop. Done and dusted.

My county has workers that go out to the encampments. RN's are deployed to go out to the homeless that have medical issues. We have a free dental clinic for the unhomed.

I think all of the unhomed that live behind my boyfriend's workplace get monthly government checks.

Between the local governments and non-profits (frequently funded by the local governments), there is a lot of regular contacts being made with the homeless in terms of social services and wellness, particularly those that stick around in the same locations or encampments.

Anonymous wrote:Many of the unhomed are unable to get/hold jobs due to untreated mental health issues.

It is legal in the US to not treat your mental health problems if you are over 18.

+1

Most of the these individuals couldn’t hold down a job even if they could shower, owned a suit (which you really don’t need for many jobs) and owned a cell phone (which most do) because they are mentally unwell and wouldn’t be reliable or show up to work on time.

At my boyfriend's workplace the homeless encampment behind him would use my boyfriend's workplace address.
