I don't see why I'd need to invite neighbors. Sometimes I'm just hosting a particular set of friends, like college friends or work friends, and don't want to invite people who wouldn't know anyone.

This would hurt my feelings if other neighbors had been invited. But if it wasn’t opened up to other neighbors and was a friend/family/coworker party, then don’t worry about it.

Unless they invited every other neighbor and left you out you don’t have a leg to stand on, OP. And even then.

I’m so sorry, OP. It does stink to be left out! Neighbors are really tough - have you ever had that experience planning something where you’re like well I could invite this family, but then I’d have to also invite these two, and then if that one comes then… and all of a sudden you’ve added twenty more people! In a lot of situations you have to make a cut somewhere and mostly it’s not personal. Especially with covid and the pandemic dogs we adopted, I’ve gotten a lot leas comfortable with tons if people in the house than I was before.

Yikes, OP, you were rude. I'm really close to my neighbors and I'm not invited to every gathering they have, nor are they invited to all of mine. We tend to organize a lot as neighbors with several houses on the street, but we all maintain our other groups of friends as well.

I agree with others - when is the last time you invited your neighbors to something?

I’d honestly be put off by your joke OP. Maybe she felt the same, are you generally jokey/pushy with things like this? Like you want to force your inclusion?

She may be forcing fake smile because she feels uncomfortable and finally stuck to her guns and this is her way of speaking up.

This is the big question OP. If you are traditionally invited, I would wonder what has changed. If you have not been invited before, I would just chalk it up to them inviting people they are closer to. And COVID was a little crazy this year so I can see keeping it small but if you were cut from the list this year, neighbor should not have mentioned it.

They're not obligated to invite you to their party just because you're neighbors. Maybe they have close friends from various walks of life and you're not that close.
