Actually, the government is following the will of the people. Those people wanted fewer police and softer penalties for violent criminals. Remember, we'd rather have many, many, many black lives die in gun violence than have a tiny, tiny, tiny number of black people die from unprovoked police brutality . . . . because only black lives that die from unprovoked police brutality matter.
No the government has been going against the will of the people. People want the guns off the street but republicans make sure that will never happen. This is years of republican policies that are soft on criminals and remove all accountability for police to actually do their job.
Given that 3 of the 4 people shot were not the intended target, I think there’s a compelling argument to teach criminals how to shoot better and more accurately. Then you’d reduce or eliminate innocent bystanders being shot.
If every criminal in DC only shot their intended victim, you’d probably see a 30+% reduction in shootings and homicides. That would be a HUGE reduction in shootings. Much more so than any other measure has ever produced. We see things like needle exchange programs to reduce the associated side effects of drug use, how would this be any different? And along those lines, perhaps the city could even supply criminals with types of firearms that have a reduced lethality potential as well?
Time to think outside the box. Because the answer isn’t inside the box. We know that.
