We moved to DC 12 years ago. None of us has ever been the direct victim of crime.

Nah, just lots of other people's cars. Our street in an alleged good neighborhood in NW had so much crime recently that we have been told by the police not to bother reporting it. We'll move as soon as last kid finishes private school. We work in Arlington so DC won't be necessary. My DH had an attempted carjack in DC but he slammed the door on the kid's hand and that stopped him from driving so that my DH could open the door and pull him out.
Are you seriously trying to argue that most kids that live in DC are criminals?

I was put in a headlock by an obviously drugged out guy who tried to drag me off the street towards a waiting car. I've had self defense training and fought him off and ran about 6 blocks at full speed to a waiting police car. I wanted to warn police this person was attacking women without provocation, but they were unconcerned and basically shrugged their shoulders, asked if I needed to go to a hospital (no), and told me to get lost.

27 years here. My credit card was swiped from my purse once, years ago, in a casual restaurant downtown. One night some guy randomly tripped me (kicked at my legs while I walked) and pretended he hadn’t done it. That was weird.

I had a home break-in when no one was home. They broke window on back door to open it and took the stereo. Not much of any value in that house, I lived there with roommates in 20s. The house next door, under renovation, had a crew come with a truck and dolly in the middle of the night and stole all the new appliances. Ledroit Park, 2000s.
I wasn't really a victim, but kids would ditch their stolen cars and set them on fire in my alley. It happened 3 times, once had to move my car, which was beside the car on fire. Another time, after setting the fire, the kids climbed a fence and jumped on my porch, pushed past us and ran down my front steps, to get away. This surprised us, my friend and me. We were enjoying a glass of wine there. H Street/Trinidad area, 2010s.
A man in a car asked me directions to Bladensburg Road. I was walking. I began to explain that he was headed in the right direction, and then noticed movement, and saw that he was jerking off furiously. I screamed and he sped off. Near Capitol Building, 2010s.
I've had my car window smashed once and packages stolen several times. I crossed paths with a group of teen carjackers who minutes later, used a gun to carjack someone else. Capitol Hill, 2020s.
There have been other things that I am just now remembering. Con artists coming to my door with stories about broken down cars. Bikes stolen. A heroin dealer who lived in a van in the alley. A young guy, possibly mentally disturbed, who followed me home and partially up my steps before I yelled loudly.
But I myself have experienced no violence, and for that I am thankful.

Groped. Guy was arrested and I testified against him. He was convicted, don't know the sentence. This was about 10 years ago.
Besides that petty theft like our car was rummaged through probably a few times at this point as folks just walk down the street and check for unlocked doors (unsure if we left unlocked or if they had one of those devices that can break in). We store our keys in special cases now.
Have heard gunshots including the loud and clear shots of a drive by murder at the end of our block and saw the car drive off.
A few package thefts and recently one attempted package theft but a neighbor noticed them and police actually came in time to catch snd arrest them.

I've lived in DC or the very-close-to-DC Maryland side (within walking distance of takoma park metro and friendship heights metro). Been in Mt Pleasant for 30 years in January, and have had two boxes stolen off our porch and that's about it. I've commuted by bus and Metro downtown for 20 of those years and nothing on public transportation. Nothing during our more active nightlife years, walking to and from Columbia Heights or Adams Morgan. THere's been crime around - gunshots in our alley or along Mt P street, a neighbor attacked randomly on the sidewalk, a friend mugged violently in Columbia Heights, neighbors calls stolen or bikes stolen, but we've never been victims ourselves.

This. Kids threw a rock through our window. Have seen kids throwing rocks at cars on street. Had our car stolen. Kid's backpack snatched by nasty random kids on metro on way home from school. Car window smashed for GPS (stupid to leave it there). Yes, we've been victims of crime. Live in a so-called 'safer' neighborhood.
