The demand for VT ComSci/Eng. is greater than the demand for W&M (anything). Yes, there are people who really prefer what W&M offers, but their numbers are significantly less than the number of people who want a CS/Eng degree from VT.

The world is being taken over (has been taken over) by CS people. I don't even thing Engineering is really very hot. If you look at what the TJHSST graduates are planning to study in college it seems that the VAST VAST majority are all planning to study CS in college. You don't see hardly any actual Engineering majors, doctors, Physics, Chemistry. It's scary and depressing that the kids who would have been going into those majors 15 yrs ago are almost ALL pursuing computer science now. We still need people in the hard sciences (and the soft sciences too!).

The issue is too many students applying for the same limited number of seats in CS and Engineering as well as students still using VT as a safety. But, PP is correct that overall, VT still has a 60-70% admit rate.

I also think the data about admission rate is mysterious.
Many kids with 4.08, 4.09, 4.1 ish GPA did not get into Tech. But if you google, it says their admission rate is over 70%.

My child's school counselor advised not to applying for ED for Tech because the admission rate is lower than EA.
Somehow, Tech admission data are different from other schools

The stats for all enrolled are definitely higher at W&M (SCHEV). DCUM isn't the best source for drawing conclusions.

For Virginians, VT and W&M are practically peer schools right below UVA.
Some Engineering majors at VT are considered peer to UVA.

ED is easier at W&M than later. VT has different priorities than W&M so it’s harder to get in just by GPA and test scores and EC.

Also, many kids just don’t like the vibe at W&M and don’t even apply. For certain students W&M is amazing. None of my DC’s friends applied to W&M. Most applied to UVA and VT.

Agree, but it cuts both ways. My DC and others at W&M had no interest in going to VT.

W&M is easier to get into if you are in state male than UVA or VT Engineering/Business/ Architecture. The overall acceptance rate is deceptive. Difficult admit for in state kids for VT’s best programs.

For in-state students for some majors (e.g., engineering and business), yes it is harder to get into VT than W&M. But overall - if you look at school wide average stats - no.

I think we can just be happy for those who got in regardless of their background and stats. And show empathy for those who were deferred. Yes, they have institutional priorities and I respect those decisions because it results in a diverse student group where my student will learn from many perspectives and connect with people he may not have otherwise known. If you don’t believe there should be equity in opportunities, maybe it isn’t the right place to apply. Fingers crossed for those going to EA!

OP absolutely implied that when they mentioned the “lower scores.”

I don't see the implication you suggest. OP said scores were lower and student was a first gen, but never said that meant student was unqualified. Any thinking person knows at this point that there is a minimum "score" to clear the hurdle, and after that it is not a determining factor.

Because they all talk amongst themselves and that’s what DS said. In fact, friend even told him he’s sure that was the only reason he got in ED - but yes, could be lots of other reasons. He might have just been making DS feel better. I’m just noting what the friend group is telling him. 🤷‍♀️

But you're an adult so you should know better. You have no idea why that child was admitted.

NP. I'm an adult and I read, so I know that, in fact, VT is on record stating that first gen students are a priority, so I believe that probably was the tipping point. Just like all the other adults who find the same claim to be completely plausible.
