I agree that April and Butch were not great parents.
Butch especially with his addictions as well as his jail stints.
But I can still empathize w/them about feeling betrayed when their children gave away their granddaughter. I cannot even fathom how I would feel if my child put up their own for adoption.
I would be so angry at them and likely never get over it.

Fundamentally I just do not see people as inanimate objects.
In my mind, shipping off a child in the same way that you do a FedEx package is just wrong.

It’s because she was not a FedEx package, but instead a person who would have physical, social and emotional needs that NO ONE in her entire extended family was capable of fulfilling, that she was placed with another family who could. If you haven’t watched her 16 & Pregnant episode you don’t know what you’re talking about.


PP Here: I DID watch 16 and Pregnant and saw Caitlyn + Tyler’s story.

It was sad to see how awful their families were, but Tyler’s Mother seemed pretty stable. I think she could have cared for little Carly.

It was just heartbreaking to watch how much emotional pain Tyler & Caitlyn were in immediately after Carly was born.
They truly wanted their child at that time.

While I hope Carly is still in a good home - I think Tyler and Caitlyn will always have guilt and an empty void due to the decision they made to give away their baby.

People in America are sometimes encouraged to give their child up for adoption vs. having an abortion.

They are basically being spoon fed that giving up their child will allow them to go on to college, develop a great career, etc.
Then when they are financially able - they can marry and have children later on.

But it doesn’t always work out that way.

People who give up their child often have a gamut of emotions that follow them the rest of their lives.
And adopted children do not always end up in ideal, happy homes w/wonderful, loving parents.

Emotions run high on both sides and there are unique issues that usually need to be faced and addressed.
Adoption is not a fairy tale for anyone.

This is one reason I would never do an open adoption.

When the adoption is not open, you have no reason to say anything bad about the bio family
The bio family has nothing bad to say about you, they are left to grieve in private, and most likely get over and manage to move on better

Sounds really like they agreed to the open adoption if that is the only way to adopt the child, since the agreement cannot be legally force
I do not think C & T are guilty of rehashing the adoption on tv, That is the whole purpose of there being on the show, and the show is about teen parenting, growing up with a baby and in their case dealing with the aftermath of a happy adoption story
Except the adoptive parents want the adoption closed and use the show as an excuse

What is the point of agreeing to a meeting and then canceling at the last minute?
Or agreeing to yearly visits and then not letting them see the kid for 2 years?
Based on a little googling the adoptive parents have been quite willing to participate in the show

That aside, it is a pity neither C or T has managed to move on
Hopefully it works out better for the adoptee, her bio parents certainly come with a lot of baggage. Somehow they were sold this beautiful story about how wonderful adoption would be, but it didn’t turn out like that

I'm the one who posted about this upthread. Their entire story line is anchored in the adoption. (They weren't teens when they had other kids, I think.) Their story line has to remain relevant to get $$ from MTV, so to do that, they continue to call Dawn, meet with her, bring presents to her, discuss the adopted girl, make scrapbooks, have bday cakes with their family for the adopted girl, etc. I have no idea why Dawn continues to be filmed for this. It actually deters others from having their babies adopted because it shows how unhappy the birth parents are about it AND fails to show how happy the adopted kid or adoptive parents are. Dawn sold out. (I know they have done public speaking together - the 3 of them).
