They are guests as well. That is their mother’s home and she invited OP and her family to stay. It is supremely selfish to have your mother sleep on a couch because you can’t share a room with your sister.

Are you really suggesting that the children of the host are equivalent on the guest chain as their cousin? That’s just absurd. I’ve never been considered a guest in the home of my parents. I’m guessing you’re a crappy parent with a crappy relationship with your kids 🙄

Sorry to disappoint but my kids would never behave like you that they were too good to share a room. But you’re selfish so you’ll never get it.

It’s not just sharing a room but sharing a bed, and you have no idea how your kids will behave when they are adults and are told they have to share a bed because their out of town adult cousin, her DH and their 2 kids need to crash with them.

Why are they selfish? I disagree. I think the aunt on the couch is a better solution than two adult women sleeping together when they don’t want to.

I would get a hotel, because I want to be comfortable and in my own space, and I prefer that my kids' don't disturb others, or be disturbed by others when they sleep.

I'm certainly not going to force two adult sisters to occupy the same bed if they don't want to!!!

Mom should go in the smallest room. Cousins in the next room, with an air mattress and OP and family take the master. But, OP is better off in a hotel.

PP. Wanted to say -- it's funny how persnickety people get about their accommodations. I grew up with people sleeping on a living room couch or big groups in pretty small spaces with air mattresses and sleeping bags deployed for effect, kids sharing their bedrooms sometimes too.

I expect to travel and live in one room all 4 of us, be it a hotel or a bedroom.

I get why the cousins don't want to sleep on a couch in their own home, as they probably see their mom's home, in rooms that were likely theirs once upon a time. But depending on the personality, some people would be arguing who will give up their room to make a guest comfortable, not letting mom sleep on the couch.

(But if it's a comfy couch maybe she might not mind it...I have a really comfy guest futon that I'd sleep on with crying baby, and it's the most comfortable thing ever. My parents have a couch that's arguably more.confy than their guest bed!)

To the people suggesting a hotel, I agree that going to live in a hotel completely changes the vibe of a family holiday visit, especially if it's a short visit.

Maybe you could offer to buy a rollaway bed as a thank you for hosting? Some can actually be comfy, and it's still cheaper than a hotel.

The cousins are jerks. But go ahead and stay in the master bedroom. Your aunt wants to spend quality time with you, which probably means those moments like coffee at 6am together when nobody else is yet awake and you get a chance to have a one on one chat together. Or late night board games after the kids have gone to sleep. I'd be sad if family were coming to spend the holidays but they wanted to stay in a hotel. (I have enough beds in my house to sleep 10 and I'm the only one who lives here year round.) I'd make an exception for a new couple that maybe wants privacy for sex since I could understand that. LOL!
