Celebrate her birthday the day before!
I was going to say this. I have been out of town form my own daughter's birthday several times. It happens.
The fat that OP pitched a fit about this is not great. The fact that she threatened to *break up* and make her partner of several years move out over it is outright insanity. If I were him, I'd be running for the hills.

A birthday is not a huge deal, whereas a business conference is quite important for work. You can all just celebrate the weekend afterward. Even for a father and his actual daughter, if he happened to have a conference on his kid’s birthday that’s just life sometimes and not outrageous.
