i order out at chipotle and I absof%^&kinglutely love to spice up the burrito/bowl with the tobasco smoked chipotle sauce they have sitting out.

so I keep a bottle at my desk. when the bottle get low. i do the five finger discount to replenish the supply.

I justify it, by the simple fact. that if i was eating the burrito or bowl IN the restaurant. I'd still be using the tobasco sauce.

In college, I can remember taking fun glasses/shot glasses. Probably around 5 or 6.

As a proper adult, none. I've never had the urge.

I stole a branded glass from Jay's the night before it closed down. I probably spent thousands there over the years so I don't feel so bad about it.

Other than that though the only "theft" I do from restaurants is grabbing excessive amounts of napkins from Chipotle.

Olive Garden breadsticks. My roommates and I were poor college students and treated ourselves to dinner at Olive Garden. Stuffed a basket of breadsticks in friend's purse so that we could have them for breakfast. Also told the waiter that it was one of the roommate's birthday (it wasn't) so we could get a free birthday cake (this was back the 90s when they were free).

I take leftover rolls from the basket at the table, too, for eating that day or to fill a bag in the freezer for bread pudding but doesn't the restaurant just throw them away?

Consumables are meant to be taken, in reasonable quantities. Disposables straws or cutlery, packets of condiments, finger wipes, matchstick packets, etc.

But most definitely NOT porcelain, silverware or cloth, ie anything with real value.

It seems even people on this thread are fuzzy about the difference.

I brought back a few pint glasses stolen from pubs in Ireland branded with Smithwicks, Guinness, Bulmers, etc that I accumulated over a study abroad semester. I wouldn’t do it now but I am glad to have them as a souvenirs.

In college, my roommate and I stole salsa from our favorite Mexican restaurant. It was refillable chips and salsa, but they brought the extra salsa out in these mini carafes. We brought a jar and would discretely pour it in, feigning surprise to the server at how fast we were eating the salsa. Totally tacky for sure, but that salsa was so good!

In my 20s when I was struggling I took extra toilet rolls a few times. I also took a steak knife from outback once just so I would have one good knife. That’s it.

I remember reading about a restauranteur who had expensive art stolen from the walls along with something meaningful to them/maybe autographed? Sad!

My worst offense was a plastic fork from a restaurant near my office that I frequented so I could eat my lunch.

Growing up my parents ran a restaurant. Nothing fancy, just your typical suburban eatery. The bathrooms were not the ones with stalls, just a single so you would be alone. People would steal anything not bolted down. Toilet paper was a given. But also the fake flowers and the cheap vase they were in. A poster on the wall. Basically any kind of "decor" my parents would put in the bathrooms would be stolen. So gross. And rude!
