The Secret History is probably my favorite book of all time. That said, my DH didn't like it, didn't finish. I think you have to like the world and like misfits.

I’m halfway through The Cloisters by Katy Hays. The jacket notes describe it as a novel of “academic obsession”. The descriptions of the Cloisters are great. If you liked “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler” this might be a book for you.

I can recommend two: Stoner, and The Rector of Justin by Louis Auchincloss. The Class by Eric Segal is pretty good too

Not his best work by any stretch, but I liked I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe when I read it...in college.
