4k Ikea cabinets
4k quartz countertops
1.5k new appliances
1.5k backsplash plus misc items
Total: 11k

I'm kind of handy but have never done a legit renovation. I ran into lots of small problems, but just figured it out. Total job took about 12 working days. Not suggesting that you DIY, but it can be helpful to know actual costs (minus labor) when getting bids.

What kind of appliances did you get for 1.5k?

I reused the refrigerator, but new dishwasher, oven and microwave are stainless steel, all GE. It's nothing fancy obviously, but looks modern and functional. This is a reno for a basic builder grade townhouse kitchen that was 25 years old.

I admire you so much! Can you tell me how and where you found cabinet installation instructions? Was there a Youtuber that was helpful?

Kitchens by Rannes on YouTube is great. It's really not that difficult if you spend a few hours watching install videos ahead of time. You just need a little patience, and try not to get too frustrated when working through the inevitable little issues that come up. Even things that appeared to be difficult, like re-routing the plumbing, is pretty simple after you watch the videos and see how the parts go together.

Remember, most of this stuff isn't like a rocketship that has very tight tolerances. I cut a piece of butcherblock for a bar and was off by a good 1/2 inch and nobody has ever noticed. Good enough is usually good enough with most of this stuff.

Thank you so much ! Checking the videos now.

Anonymous wrote:Our kitchen is tiny. About the size of my old walk in closet. It’s costing us about 40k to renovate the kitchen and knock out a wall to make it slightly bigger.

You are being ripped off. Ha, ha! No, seriously, can't you tear down the wall yourself? Is it a bearing wall?

Can you elaborate?

We described the scope of our project to different contractors. Materials and Labor should be close. One contractor's labor came in at 30k, the other 15k. How does opportunity cost factor in?

Most contractors need to make X per day and don’t bother with jobs less than a certain dollar figure because it is too much trouble. So it doesn’t matter how basic your design is. They need to charge X minimum.

Assume PP reused some of the existing appliances.
