My DC (20 months old) who has expressive and receptive delay has been to work with an educator/developmental specialist for now, not speech therapist yet. Does anyone know why that might be ? I would think they need to work with a speech therapist but wait and work with an educator? We are in Fairfax county. This was through child find. Any help would be appreciated.

This is pretty common sadly.

Meaning what?

Dp, but as a parent of a child with MERLD it means a good speech therapist can really make a difference in the early years and help ease a child's frustration.

My child went from 3 words to more than 100 in 8 months, really helping family life.

They are probably short-staffed and tend to prioritize by need. If you can affair I’d look into private speech.

At least in PG County it was there are other delays (but not enough to qualify for additional services) and they assume a special educator can work on multiple areas of development (appropriate play -which will very much look like speech therapy for receptive delays- maybe some fine motor stuff, etc). If you want additional speech, you can see if insurance will cover it. Also, there’s a little speech preschool program in McLean called Dolley Madison that starts at 2.5- you might want to look into if you’re in Fairfax county.

Thanks. They said to wait for speech and first work with an educator. Which makes me wonder if they suspect anything else.
