Oh ok! We don’t do those holidays in LA, but we have Juneteenth and all the Jewish holidays.

Because no teaching happens once the SOLs are held and yet we have weeks of school after....those count towards the 180 days but no real instruction happens. Is that what you want for your kids education? Imbecile.
So why don't you focus on what happens after the sols, or when they are administered? Having one day off for a holiday observed by a billion people around the world doesn't seem like it would be as important as that.

Liberals fought hard to remove any entanglement between public school and Christian religion, now these hypocrites can't add enough religious holidays to the schedule.
Wish my kids were in school and learning. Wish the School Board even cared about that.
It's interesting the push for the school holiday when many Indians in the area are contractors whose company doesn't provide the day off. Yes, they can take a vacation day if they have some available or they can take the day off without pay so many don't. The celebration mostly happens in the evening anyway so no reason parents couldn't work the day if they had to.
Just some perspective
Your perspective should add that kids are usually up (and possibly out) very, very late on this holiday and would not have time to do HW.

Ah, no, but it is a good day to do some enrichment in the academics they are missing out on in FCPS due to all the extra holidays.

Anonymous wrote:Here's what I don't get... why are some of the religious holidays teacher workdays, and others are just holidays with everyone off? It almost seems like FCPS is using these religious holidays as an excuse to have teacher workdays, if the holidays come at the right time in the calendar.
Anonymous wrote:We have a longer year, though. As a teacher, I would prefer less days off during the year and a longer summer. These days off here and there help to catch up on sleep, but I can’t clear my head. I am always thinking about teaching.

In years past, teachers and students took the religious holidays off anyway. And it was a scramble to find subs and nothing of substance got taught. And if one math teacher was our but the other wasnt then it wasn't fair to the kids who didn't have teacher instruction that day. It is really really hard to get subs right now in the post pandemic great resignation. Want more days in school? Lobby for better sub pay.
Well, if something's bad for a few kids then it should be bad for 170,000 kids. The FCPS rally cry.
