The message from school seems to be - trust us, we know what we are doing?
But do they? Everything is so opaque nowadays including college admissions

Can you elaborate on this? Are the girls not doing well on the AP Physics test?

For all any of us know, the teachers might still be mostly following the AP curriculum but just not advertising that
