My oldest is in 2nd and it seems most parties are still everyone except a few. Both are OK. You do you.

We are still going strong with whole-class birthday parties in 3rd grade but I'm hoping it's just a Covid catch-up thing.
We have personally never done the whole class party. We just had our kids pick 3-6 friends (some were from school, some not). But our kids' birthdays both fall when school is not in session so that makes it easier.

In my circle the whole-class parties stopped by third grade. I think the etiquette if you're not inviting the whole class is to invite less than half. Or all girls or less than half the girls, etc. Point being you don't exclude just a couple kids in the class.

Maybe this is regional. We did one whole class party when my child was in 2nd grade bc we rented out a local pool for a flat fee.
Otherwise, we have always done parties with a handful of their friends. I would say their friends have done the same. Only a whole whole class invites here and there through the yrs and I have three kids.

How common is it for kids to not have enough people for a party? I assume kids without a group of close friends find a couple of kids to do smaller celebrations. I’m curious how others have navigated this scenario.

I never did this. I ask my kid who he wants to invite and he tells me. Sometimes it's only two kids. Then I invite the moms via text. My oldest son in second grade just got an all-class invite and said "Why would he invite me? We don't even play together." I think it is a nice gesture but unnecessary. And yes I am sending him to the party.

We went to several whole class parties in 3rd grade.. because covid and no one had party the previous years. Do what you want for your kid OP its all good
