How much is it if the insurance doesn’t cover it?

Everybody and their cat are going to be on these in the next two years. At least those who can afford it; they're not going generic any time soon. I'm kind of dreading how it will change our culture but it will be interesting. Being thin is going to be perfectly accessible to all who have the money.

Here's one cat that's giving this a try due to this thread. I saw this thread this morning and already have a prescription called in. Really excited to give this a try.

I’ve been on ozempic for about 3 months now and have lost 25 lbs. I would say that the first month and a half were absolutel hell. I wondered if I could even continue on the medication. But then it all went away.

I also want to say that in my experience you still have to change what you eat if you’re going to lose weight. I joined weight watchers at the same time I started ozempic. I don’t think the weight will stay off unless I change some habits long term.

Did those side effects fade over time or do you deal with them every day?

I’ve been on Mounjaro 2.5 months and lost 28 lbs (before MJ lost 10 lbs dieting). Was 204, now am 166. At 5’2” I still have at least 30 lbs more to lose. The side effects have been moderate for me. Nausea, vomiting, fatigue and hair loss. But as someone who is prediabetic with hypertension, and chronic pain making it difficult to exercise, MJ has been a game changer. Despite moderate side effects the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Having gained and lost 60 lbs multiple times throughout my life, the hope that this med can treat obesity long term is amazing. I really hope I can get to a healthy weight someday using Mounjaro or another GLP drug.

How can one get it 15 lbs overweight?

NP here. I've been on Wegovy, then Ozempic when the Wegovy coupon ended, and now Mounjaro 7.5. I was 5'4" and 185 when I started (at age 53) and I'm now 135.

My experience going off the drugs (from Wegovy to Ozempic, then Ozempic to Mounjaro given delays in being able to fill the scripts) was that the hunger did come roaring back, but not to the extent that I gained significant weight back. But enough (maybe 10 pounds?) that I was motivated to get back on the drugs.

For anyone complaining about "overweight" people getting these drugs -- I agree that people shouldn't get them just to lose 10 pounds. But overweight is a condition that's very hard to change, especially but not limited to if you're in perimenopause or menopause, if you have hypothyroidism, or any number of other issues that makes it extremely hard to lose weight no matter how much you cut calories, cut carbs, exercise, you name it.

We have some level of control over what we eat, but that doesn't mean we have total control over how much we eat based on hunger. That's hormonally driven. If your metabolism is deranged, you can deprive yourself all you want until the cows come home and you're extremely likely to regain any weight you've managed to lose through massive deprivation.

These drugs are a game-changer, and we should be happy for anyone who uses them to get back from overweight into normal ranges. They're not just for obese people and we shouldn't tell people they can't have these drugs until they're obese. There are plenty of increased risk factors from being overweight, and there's much less cost to society of people are able to control their weight rather than waiting until they have diabetes, cancer, or other health issues to treat those then.

Let's not get carried away. I didn't have any side effects, but I also didn't lose any weight on it after 6 months (when I stopped). It's not for everybody.

Non responders are uncommon but they do exist. What drug and dose were you on?

Regardless, these drugs are rapidly getting more and more effective. Novo I believe has one in development that’s proving to be even more effective than Mounjaro, which is even more effective than Ozempic/Wegovy, to begin marketing next year or 2024. I believe within 10 years we will essentially have a treatment for obesity.

The oral version of semaglutide is not nearly as effective for weight loss because of absorption issues. The once weekly injections are much more convenient and effective.

Regardless, it sounds like this could (at least in theory) eliminate widespread obesity

I just hope the widespread adoption changes the absurdly inaccurate and wildly unscientific “willpower” narrative with respect to obesity, so we can finally make some progress on addressing the root causes of obesity.
