My private school kid still gets Cs. They aren't a dirty word everywhere.
This is public school. Your kid is at the wrong private if they are struggling that much given they start algebra in 8th.
He took algebra 1 in 8th grade in public school and got an A. Most private schools require placement tests for all incoming freshmen for math and foreign language. I guess that A didn’t mean much because he and his friends had to retake algebra 1 in 9th grade and he got a C. Public school grades are pretty meaningless. I was always surprised that he got straight As in middle school. His work was not A work in any way, shape or form.
Are you MCPS, as most kids who are bright take Algebra in 7th, some 6th. Sounds like your kid isn't very strong in math. And, it sounds like your kid had bad teachers and you didn't look over the homework/classwork and work with him to help him.

Because they don't like math, I suspected that dropping down wouldn't change anything, so we let it ride. Better a D in honors algebra than a D in regular algebra, I figured.
They repeated honors algebra 2 over the summer and got an A. I'm hoping the lesson also sank in that failing math begets more math. Some of us aren't math people, shrug.
Your point about on grade v honors makes a lot of sense to me. DC does not have greater number sense. I don’t see how regular will solve that problem.
After summer school, which class did you kid take?

Drop down to non-honors Algebra 2 or drop further down to Algebra 2A which last two semesters. Our students has struggled with math the last couple of years, but with the number of retakes and redos available ends up with As and Bs. They could do the same again this year, but perhaps it is time to slow down on the math pathway to ensure learning? Trying to figure out what is best.
Two-year Algebra 2?
