My father and husband both loved their time in boyscout camp. They also are both firmly against any child (or grandchild) of theirs participating, because it’s not worth the risk. It’s true that any organization *could* accidentally hire a predator, but it’s very different to sign your child up to be in the care of an organization which *did* hire predators, and go to great lengths to protect them. If, heaven forbid, your child is abused in Scouts how do you look them in the eye and say you tried to protect them when all the information was out there?

There is so much training for leaders now. Two-deep leadership is required for all events, both Cubs & Scouts BSA. This includes merit badge sessions in BSA.

My son was in Cubs. We signed him up on a whim. "This will be fun." He loved the camping and hikes. He loved the "boy led" aspect of Scouts BSA. He went on to earn Eagle last year. It was the best whim decision we ever made.

I agree with a PP that the Den leader(s) and Cubmaster will determine what sort of Pack you have. You won't know until you try it for a year. We had an amazing Cubmaster my son's first 3 years.


I'm definitely reluctant to have my kids in Cub Scouts based on events, but this takeaway is great. How awesome he wasn't a legacy Eagle (some are!) and really found his groove...on a whim!

Do you notice how you've centered the "good deeds" of the perpetrator here? Yeah, we ruined lots of lives with our program, but we tried to give some money in exchange for it!

The BSA is and will continue to be a strong and well-run organization. Like the schools and other youth organizations, it has shameful periods in its past (including youth abuse) that it has corrected and is moving on from. There is a DCUM group that is immovably anti-BSA and is well represented by commenters on this thread. They get a kick out of recycling the same old outdated stuff. I suggest the rest of us drop interest in this thread.

Scouts was great for my kid. I am sad how many kids will be robbed of the experience because their parents kept them away from it.


Funny cuz I’m sad for the boys and men who had their lives destroyed and are being denied justice and reparations even today. All these abused boys and men are former scouts so you’d think you would feel some allegiance and solidarity for them. But maybe that’s not what scouting is.


Todays kids can not repair the damage done years back...they can learn alot and do lots of good through tremendous leadership and service projects in a very changed organization.

Scouting has been wonderful for my girl, who hopes to be an Eagle Scout. I’m impressed by the level of confidence it is giving her. We questioned it at first, mainly because we didn’t know how being a girl would affect her experience, but it has been wonderful. The kids and parents work well together to deliver terrific experiences.

They should have issued a strong response re: the politicization, the fact that the several former Eagle Scouts in his cabinet smiled and clapped like halfwits during his unhinged rant, and also a little something about the gross hitlerjugend vibe would’t have gone amiss!

Every thread on this subject is the same old same old, mostly from people who have no current or former experience with scouts. My kids decided not to go into boy scouts, but they really did enjoy their time in cub scouts. Hiking, camping, pinewood derby, and generally being outdoors and having fun with other kids. What more could you ask for.


Not being around pedos


Try not being an ar$hole. Everyone associated with every organization that has had the great misfortune to have children abused by trusted adults (and that is literally every organization involving children for obvious reasons) is not themselves a podo or in favor of pedos or hoping it happens to their kid. We can't let the sick abusers shut down every single club and activity and school and church for our children. We can do our best to put protection in place and processes for accountability.

Unless you have locked your children in your house, you too are exposing them to potential pedophiles every day.


The only released A PORTION of their files in 2012 and had to do so under court order. They knew, the knew and they tried to keep it quiet and they tried and continue to try to short the survivors. So, no we shouldn’t shut down every activity hyperbole Harriett, but we should not allow organizations that have abused thousands of boys in the past and covered it up and continue to try to cover up as much as they can and protect their assets before the kids, shut down. I mean wow, no wonder kids keep getting abused because there are so many ostriches and apologists here.
