I love Savannah and SCAD seems like a great school, but the kid of person actively concerned about a safe area is not going to think Savannah qualifies

I love Savannah, and I agree.

Yep Savannah ranges from medium to high crime rate. It also lacks what a big city would offer in terms of internships, networking and job opportunities in the field.

This, agree 100%.

It's one of the top programs in the nation and you can't beat the instate price.

VCU.

And MICA: expensive, and not a safe neighborhood. Our teen did a summer program there prior to graduating and selecting VCU. Every day they were in the program we got some sort of alert from the school about some kind of incident that took place.

If they're trying to become an independent artist they'll need cheap studio space. Which puts you right back in the same conundrum. Not to mention all the other interesting artists they'll want to commune with will be living in cheap "unsafe" areas as well - because they likely won't be cushioned by their parents' money. It seems like there's an inherent disconnect between wanting to be an artist and wanting to live a completely safe lifestyle.

Unless you want them to go into graphic design or animation or something similarly corporate and stable - but then we'd be talking about different schools, wouldn't we?

Any Virginia resident not considering VCU for an art degree is an idiot.
