Your kids aren't really out of the house when they are in college. There are still summers, weekends, and holidays, and then there's the year or so that many live at home after college. My oldest stayed with me for about 6 months after he graduated while he looked for places to live. They won't be able (or won't want to) stay with you if you have a one bed room apartment. Just something to think about...

My kids are in elementary. I moved out at 16. They know I am getting an apartment. If they want to live with me in the summer, I will rent a beach house. I am not supporting a huge house after they go to college. I am more likely to help them with housing costs. I am not keeping the house.

That might make sense with high interest rates like now, but with anything around and under 3.5% renting is less financially feasible. My mortgage is fixed for the next 7 years and with a rental unit in the basement in my DC house it's cheaper to live in a SFH vs renting a 1br.

PP here. That is your situation. I don't live in DC and I don't have a rental unit. I like my money in the bank and investment accounts...not trapped in home equity I can't touch. The only reason I am not renting an apartment now is because I have kids. I want to live minimally and see my money grow in the bank. Over time, stocks perform better than holding onto housing. I don't like houses and the headaches that come with them. I want to call the front desk for any maintenance issues and I don't want bedrooms not being used. Not everyone wants to have and maintain a house. I feel like you are literally paying to store crap. No thanks. My house is for my kids. Once they are adults, they are not kids...I am not maintaining a huge house for them to visit.

Also, telling the board that “judges don’t take kindly” to whatever it is you want anyway doesn’t do much. Most of us know how a court works.. if you can’t and don’t get the kids to school on time because you’re an hour away then that will impact custody. If you can and do get the kids to school on time, then nobody much cares if you live in or out of district.

You don't have much experience with renting do you? A lease is 12 months. In this area renting an apartment is a solid $40,000 to $50,000 annual expense. You don't just rent for a few weeks or months. Most Landlords require 12 month leases.

Why don’t you guys just stay married. You don’t really want to move, or you wouldn’t be posting. You still want to do things as a family. Why not spend the money you’d be spending on housing to have fun with your husband. Seriously.
