I don't think it is a big deal. OP's DH makes good money and can make a purchase like this. OP needs to earn some respect and either support him or go and get a job.

I almost always tell my DH if I buy something over $300. This could be clothing, tickets, or even something boring like professional association dues (which get reimbursed). I don't tend to tell him about hair appointments or medical stuff.

My DH...doesn't return the favor. It's a sore spot. He also has a habit of buying $1,000 gifts for his parents a few times a year. I don't do that with mine so it's an additional sore spot.

I've tried to talk about it and it doesn't go well.

We can afford it, so I sometimes bring it up again but generally let it go.

Do you tell your spouse about high ticket items?
Does it matter if one spouse is the only one earning an income?

For sure. It doesn't matter whose money it is, large expenses are always discussed and shopping is done together as two minds are better than one. However, if its not a common practice and already done then just let him enjoy and don't drain the joy.
