I could NEVER starve myself or skip meals. But I am willing to cook most of my meals, ensure my plates is half full of fruits or vegetables, and forego seconds of anything. I am also willing to avoid virtually all packaged food and save drinking for special occasions- like a few times a year. I can do this and maintain a size 4 (a real size 4, not a vanity-size 4). If I exercised the kind of discipline people on this board talk about, I assume I would be a size 2. But I wouldn’t be very happy about it!

My goodness, such braggadocio here!

I exercise and watch what I eat because I am not a naturally slim person, want to stay healthy and in shape to keep up with my very active teens, and am also too cheap to invest in a new full work wardrobe. I'm normal-sized for a 50 year old woman, but not super-thin. Then again, I don't need the societal approbation that comes from being very slender--I have other things in my life that matter more to me. But hey, you do you.

I look better as a size 0/2

I'm really not hungry all the time.

I have a gorgeous wardrobe filled with designer pieces tailored to fit my 0/2 frame. I do not wish for all of these beautiful clothes to go to waste so I take the steps necessary to continue to wear them.

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels

Ha, I didn't see the 240 pp before I posted, we could be twins!

If I cook all my food myself, stay away from all sugar, and walk a mile a day, I can maintain my 220 pound weight.

If I starve myself and exercise twice a day, I can get down to 190.

Because I want to stay a size 18. If I actually ate junk food or even sugar and didn't exercise, I wouldn't be able to fit through the door of my house.

Our food supply and our suburban layout aren't conducive to being a healthy weight. So if I want to be a healthy weight, and I don't have the luxury of living in a city with a robust public transport and an assumption that you'll walk a few miles each day as part of a normal routine- and I have to eat highly processed breads, meats, etc unless i want to spend a fortune or just skip bread and meat altogether- I have to eat a lot less and actively "work out" a lot more.

I don't think you would be overweight if you ate cooked food from grocery stores, while skipping snacks and desserts, and truly doing the peloton or a 3 mile jog every single day. If you could do that consistently you would be golden.

Lol. I do all of this, except it’s a 5 mile walk a day, and I weigh 240 pounds. I’m still golden though ; )

Kudos to you! A five mile walk every single day, or even most days, is very difficult to maintain over time. And you don't eat out or snack on junk! You are golden, and doing better than most!

When I was going through some hard times I was 5'7 and 125 pounds. EVERYTHING looked good on me. It was easy to dress.

Sigh....that is probably why.

Anonymous wrote:I’ve been thinking about this lately. I’ll start by saying that health is wealth, and maintaining a nutritious diet, being active and exercising, and maintaining healthy blood pressure/cholesterol etc are important. That being said, for a lot of people, especially women, the emphasis isn’t on health but on being skinny. If it takes so much work (and hunger!) to be as skinny as you think you’re supposed to be, why do you do it? Why not be content with what your body looks like while eating normally and exercising?

np What do you mean by this? Do you think everyone's idea of "normal" eating is the same. What is normal eating to you? What is kind of exercise is normal for you? Look, I get what you are saying but, we are all different. I am short and for me I need to be ten pounds lighter to be the healthiest I can be. I do not need you to be telling me what is normal or not.

Just worry about yourself.

I love your honesty.

....in the meantime, I receive a lot of attention and compliments. I've also reached the age where I have zero f@cks left, yet I still want to maintain my slim figure it simply feels good to me.

I mean that’s fine, hopefully you’re not passing that down to your daughter or grand daughter. and hopefully as you age you allow yourself to gain some weight. Because it’s not healthy to be a very skinny older person.

Pounds add up. I allow some flexibility in my weight but not much. I watch my weight closely by some standards (weigh myself once a week) but not all that closely by others (daily is too much for me). I’m conscious of the fact that being up 3 lb this year could become being up another 3 next year and the next…it would be fine if I gained 5 lb. But it’s hard to stop weight gain.

Our lives are sedentary and filled with crappy food. So I eat fairly restrictively but only because I believe a lot of what we are surrounded with is crap and makes me feel bad.

So I guess I’m fairly restrictive and watch my weight closely but only because I think it’s a fairly slippery slope.

I see the meals people eat and the snacks they have and think “is it worth being fat just to eat THAT.”

I eat delicious, healthy meals, don’t overindulge on junk, love my daily workouts and love being both thin and strong. It is possible.
