I had his CD’s as well as posters of him on my walls.
My favorite song of his was/is “Can We Talk.”
Man he was so adorable > he had the cutest smile & I was totally smitten.
Of course I had heard the rumors back then that he was gay - but I thought that is all that they were.
Rumors.
In his “Can We Talk” music video - I could tell he looked ill at ease + uncomfortable, like he was wearing a fake smile the entire time but chalked it up to him being so young and new to the scene.
But now that he is officially out, I know there will NEVER be a chance for us.
😭
Lol.
I didn't know he was gay until much later.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:^^ So wrong. There is no way any teen heartthrob black, white or orange would have ever been able to be a musical success if they publicly stated that they were homosexual.
Tevin would have been canceled before the term in its current context before he would get nominated for his next Grammy.
Imagine if in 1992 to 1994 Tevin would have been seen dating guys…..!?? Look at what happened to Ellen DeGeneres when she came out.
She lost a huge fan base and had her comedy series get canceled.
It would be unheard of today.
Tevin was right to keep his mouth shut about his sexual orientation however in 1999 (?) when he got busted for soliciting a Male hooker his secret was pretty much out then.
I recently saw him on a live podcast and he was wearing black nail polish and some of his mannerisms could have been mistaken for gay. But Pete Davidson wore black nail polish too so my gaydar is actually very amateur level. Lol.
Right, just think about all of the teen heartthrobs that were in the closet back then - Ricky Martin, Jon Knight, Lance Bass…Part of their appeal is that young girls fantasize the guys are singing to them. It’s like that classic episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Tevin Campbell serenaded Ashley. That fantasy doesn’t work if the singer is openly gay.
Contrast this with someone like Luther Vandross who everyone knew was gay but still loved. Women weren’t lusting after him, rather his music was perfect for couples and lovers to appreciate together, so his sexuality didn’t matter.

Sad that he felt like like he had to hide since his audience wouldn’t accept him. That’s something the black community really needs to own and address: it’s homophobia. You’d think a group as persecuted as the black community would be better at accepting diversity.
Eff off! You don't know shit about us. We supported TC even though it was obvious he’s gay. I can’t stand you self-righteous clowns.

Hit a nerve.
Yes, you did.
White people need to check their shit instead of judging everyone else.

NP. You know that most of them can’t do that. White folks always trying to dissect other groups at the same time they commit genocide around the world. They never own their shit, so they pivot and attempt to gaslight other groups.
I know, sis. I’m so sick of it.
Facts. Always quoting stats on other groups.

Even thirty years ago - one could not be who they were, they had to pretend to be someone else.
Thank goodness these days it is SO much better.
Frank Ocean and Lil Nas have come out & no one bats an eye.
But three decades ago it was unheard of.
Glad the world has progressed to the place we are in now.
Posters are forgetting TC was a teenage heartthrob. Teen girls were his biggest fan base so of course he was in the closet. Male artists targeting that demo still hide it today. Look at Harry Styles and Sean Mendez. They waited until they’d aged out of the teenybopper audience to become more publicly open with their sexuality.
It took George Michael 18-19 years to walk out of the closet that most people knew he was sheltering. More importantly he did not willingly come out of the closest of his own volition. He was outed when he was busted for soliciting sex with a man in a restroom. GM would not have been accepted as gay earlier in his career.
He came out in 1998 and became even more famous.
Elton John came out bisexual in the 70s and gay in the 80s.
