I bet this is one of THOSE people who accuse those of us who are trying to avoid Covid as being overly fearful. And here they are, afraid of muggy weather and a few bugs!

Swanson actually allows them to eat indoors or outdoors I think which is ideal if you have the right setup, which they do.

I wish Williamsburg allowed them to eat outside if they want to.

With a serious rat problem all over Arlington, i am not sure outdoor eating is the solution for the community.
But i do agree with the idea of the kids eating outside and getting fresh air.

If the students behaved better, maybe that would be a possibility. Last year there were issues, particularly with the boys "fight club" that ruined it for everyone. Also, they were forced to get rid of 10+ teachers last year, so there's less adults to supervise.

Funny that kids take field trips to outdoor places but don’t eat lunch outside.

Today is a beautiful day. We’d be eating outside if my kids were home. When at work, I eat outside.

Outdoor lunch is about fresh air, nature, and it is quieter. Fluorescent lights v sunlight and sky.

Schools need to encourage time outside every time possible, including lessons. When weather ok, lunch is perfect block for that.

Kids can handle a little weather when they eat. What about all that talk of kids and grit?

There should be tables and sun protection. Some APS schools have that.

But most schools and parents resist change, unless there is an app for it.

Why is outdoor lunch so triggering for you?

When I asked my young kids if they ate outdoors yesterday, they said "yeah, it was really strange as we sat right next to the cafeteria but couldn't eat inside even though it was really hot in the sun."

Even 6 year olds see the COVID safety theater as dumb.

Again schools are eating outside because there are benefits that have nothing to do with recess. 1) less staff required and 2) kids get more recess. Why would it have anything to do with covid if kids are maskless. It just wound up being a better situation.

The OP didn't say anything about covid at all: "I just found out our elementary school is having lunch outside again this year. Anyone know if this an APS decision or school by school? My kids hate it and we’re really looking forward to eating at a table again!"

What are you talking about? It seemed people were upset because of covid reasons - which doesn't matter if there's no masking inside any way. It doesn't affect me one way or the other. If its a nice day outside, let them eat outside. But its been beastly hot this week.
