LOL. I’m a former teacher in FCPS. There is most definitively room for 3 extra laptops in a classroom if they don’t fit on the cart. In fact, one was at my desk (my own). Most classrooms have an area in the back with a small table for reading groups or a book area. Plenty of room for 3 measly laptops. You do know they used to have 3-5 desktops in each classroom?

If I had a cart I would have no problem charging a few laptops elsewhere in the room.

Please ask parents to donate a cart that holds 32 laptops. We will be happy to provide one.

I spoke to both the teacher and principal and they seemed to think it was a countywide laptop policy, not a school decision. There aren’t enough carts/outlets at our school to charge at school.

But the vast majority of FCPS ES schools are NOT requiring this. So its clearly not necessary.

StandSteady brand has carts with capacity of 32 (and that is just from a random search). I bet there are many other brands and options.

I do agree that parents are not aware of all the classroom limitations, but how about we try to find a solution that will work for you and not hurt our kids? I promise parents are not out trying to spite teachers. On the contrary, if you say what you need to do your job well, we will happily help. However, please keep in mind that parents have valid health concerns for their kids when it comes to carrying heavy loads.

This is why most schools go rid of carts- to hold an entire class worth of laptops you need at least 2 and there’s no room for that.

Our school also requires kids to bring them home to charge them (grade 3-6). The younger grades don’t use them as often so I guess they can keep them charged. Apparently they don’t have enough space or outlets to charge all of them for the older grades. I agree that it’s a huge pain and makes the backpacks heavy.

It would be great if we had a computer cart that we could put out in the hall.

Most parents I know respect teachers and sincerely want to help, so we would be happy to pull together and help buy computer carts (or anything else necessary) for classrooms if that is the problem. It sounds like a win-win for everybody. Who should be approached to suggest this solution, teacher or principal (I don’t know who makes the decision about carrying the laptops home)?
