PD days are days the that teachers spend being professional and working. There is more to what goes into teaching than just being 'live' in front of your students during the hours they are there. When do you think the teachers got their lessons planned and resources ready?

I don't know. I agree with the general idea that teachers need leave if they are sick, but I don't agree that there should be more days available for any reason. I'm sorry, but with so many days off and holidays, plus days away from classes for training, teachers taking personal vacations during the school year really shouldn't be common.

I think this issue highlights a bigger issue of inadequate sick leave for teachers and the lack of coverage if they need to take leave. If a teacher is sick, whether it’s COVID or any other illness, they need time and support to recover. In the private sector, staff get leave with no distinction of sick or personal days. Increase the overall number of days, allow unlimited days to roll over year to year, so staff can use leave that they have earned as they need to.

However, I have a genuine question. Between COVID leave that was available and the amount of time spent working virtually, wouldn't many teachers who aren't new have amassed a decent amount of sick leave that could be used if you get COVID?

Correct. They can also be very strict about when you can use personal days or sick days. Admin can veto any personal day use and you have to apply at least three days ahead of time. Some admin require a sub before they will approve a day off. Getting a sub can also be a huge issue particularly on Fridays or Mondays.

that is correct. 10 sick days (8 for sick leave bank members), 3 personal days. nothing else. this is for 10 month employees, which is all teachers.

There was an email from ERSC tonight. They're dropping CareFirst PPO and HMO as of 1/1/2023 and offering Cigna instead. It's just absurd timing. As if employees weren't stressed enough already, let's destabilize everyone's insurance situation. They noted that it will save them money, and also that most of us hopefully won't lose access to too many doctors. I'm sure they think that's reassuring.
They are going to have more employees hitting the door with this—so dumb.
Maybe, but it's awful late to be springing this for anyone wanting to find a job in a different district in time for the beginning of the school year. The only thing worse than changing health insurance is losing health insurance altogether.
