Why are all these bags marketed as carryons and then made slightly larger than is permissible?

In my experience this size suitcase will fit in an overhead bin on a regular jet (737, A320, etc), but of course not in one of those regional jets where you have to gate check most rollaboards. Most US airlines won't bat an eye at this size suitcase being brought on board a plane. Overseas they tend to be stricter, and are more likely to put the suitcase in a sizer and make you check it. I would be fine with assuming you could carry this on most US airlines, but not in Europe or Asia.

I should have mentioned that this would be for domestic travel only.

You should be fine then. Put it in the bin with the wheels facing out and it will very likely fit.

Dimensions (unexpanded) are 20"x14"x7" which fit perfectly (he reported) in all international flights he took.

It was reasonably roomy. Yes he had to wash out some clothes.

Make sure your rollaboard is EU-flagged airline compatible if you’re not flying US carriers. Theirs are smaller than US size.

Just got back from 10 days in Croatia where it was 35+ degrees everyday. Carry on only for both me and DH. We each brought the Ebags mother lode backpack (fits under seat) and the standard Away rollaboard.

I packed:
4 dresses
2 long sleeve wraps (didn't need to wear)
3 pairs of Pjs (sweat at night)
6 t-shirts
5 shorts/skirts
2 bathing suits
2 coverups/rash guards
5 bras
7 undies
Sunhat
Birkenstock Gizeh
Water shoes (Croatia coast is rocky)
Tevas for hiking
Pared down toiletries - brought as much solid stuff as possible (deodorant, sunscreen, makeup) and transferred liquids to small jars.

To visualize how my bags looked - one side of the Away bag was shoes, toiletries, medicines, hat. The other side had half of the clothes. The backpack had the other half of my clothes plus electronics and snacks for the plane.

On the plane I wore joggers, a T-shirt and sneakers. I washed a few pair of underwear in the hotel sink with shampoo - no issues there. I used the hotel provided shampoo, conditioner and body lotion and wore lots of ponytails and buns.

The carry ons became critical when our two hour connection became 5 minutes and we made the flight bc we had no checked bags.

(We did check a bag coming home bc of purchased liquid gifts. Was not concerned about it being delayed, but it was not.)

We went to italy on our honeymoon for 10 days with carryons. Did laundry 1ce. It was fine.

We did 11 days in Europe with a carryon. It's definitely doable. There's lots of resources available on the internet to help you figure it out. There's ton of videos on Youtube.

I wouldn't check a bag going to Europe this summer.

This bag looks nice but it’s bigger than the carry on size for most airlines. Not sure how that would work if you show up and they make you check it.

I've flown at least ten times with it in the last year and have never had to check it except on a very small prop plane where nothing larger than a backpack fit in the overhead bins. Then everyone gate-checked their roller bag carry-ons and picked them up at the bottom of the stairs (no jetway). Away makes a smaller version of this carry on too.

We used to be a check in family but after having luggage lost/delayed twice the last year, I will try to avoid it all costs.
- take advantage of the personal item allowance that fits under your seat. I usually bring a small Tumi backpack that fits under. Will put a clutch in this for a nicer bag for trip.
-we do sink washing in summer for bathing suits and underwear bc easy to do in warm weather places with balcony
-shoes is the toughest but I put flip flops in backpack, wear cute sneakers to airport, and then pack a nicer wedge sandal for dinners
-I try to pack a capsule wardrobe to mix and match
-a few fun accessories to change up outfits, earrings, scarves etc.

I did 10 days in Greece last August in a carry on. I packed about 7 dresses, 3 bathing suits, 2 beach cover ups, a skirt, 2-3 pairs of shorts, 1 pair of linen pants, 2 pairs of sandals, 4 tank tops, 3 pairs of pajamas, underwear, bras, 2 workout outfits, 1 pair of leggings (for the airplane), and all my toiletries (and I'm a high maintenance gal.)

You can do it.
