Carpet is deducted in the tax code over 5 years. It's one of the quicker deductions because it's not really supposed to last for 10-20 years. Even the IRS acknowledges this.
Ask your landlord in writing. If it's been 10+ years, you're due for new carpet.

Small landlord here. If I had a tenant staying 10-12 years, paid on time, little/no issues, I'd change the carpet. Tenant turnover and vacancy cost are some of the largest expenses for a landlord, and it it means you'll stay there another some years, I'd be happy to replace the carpet. Cost of carpet replacement would be approx. the same as cost of one tenant turnover expenses and one month vacancy in my case.
