My friend who allows flower picking have difficult kids. They are always fighting, complaining, crying and whining. I remember mentioning the flower picking and she shrugged. She truly didn’t care. She was probably just glad to have a little peace and her girls weren’t fighting.

One could argue the kids are being creative and using their imagination.

If I were OP, I would have politely alerted the mothers rather than address/yell at the boys directly. It's really not a stranger's place to reprimand a child when the parent is present.

I really think some parents are truly clueless. Like space cadet clueless. My next door neighbors are really nice, but it’s a free for all with their kids. Numerous times I have had to tel their kids to stay out of my garden and stop picking the flowers when they were playing on my front lawn - while their parents were literally standing right to there. I was talking to the dad once, who had his back to the road (and where his kids were playing) and another neighbor had to bolt into the road to move his toddler out of the way of an oncoming car. This shit happens ALL THE TIME with them. It’s like they have no clue.

What’s wrong with pulling flowers by the root out of a garden bed in a public area that a landscaper planted for all to enjoy? That’s your question? If it was wildflowers in a field, that’s one thing. This was not that and is totally disrespectful and inappropriate.


I agree. Although I also think that pulling up ANY flower by the roots is unacceptable, unless it's a buttercup or a dandelion.

I know someone who got a fairly hefty fine for cutting armloads of wildflowers by the roadside in Virginia. They're protected. I can imagine these root-pullers growing up with a similar sense of entitlement to my acquaintance.

I think the kids (and their parents) were wrong here too, but what's with all of you that insist that the kids need to be "sternly" corrected? A six year old might not know the difference between planted plants and dandelions. Just explain it to them nicely - "Oh hey guys! These flowers actually aren't for picking, they're for everyone to see and enjoy. See how they are part of the garden here? Why don't you go pick those dandelions that aren't part of this pretty garden (or "can you go find some pretend flowers for your sandbox garden instead?" if there are no dandelions).


If a six year old doesn't know the difference between wild flowers and planted flowers, that's because the parents have failed to teach them the difference. Every toddler loves picking flowers. There are zero six year olds on the planet that haven't given their parents many opportunities to teach them.
