Sean Ferguson is a famous Jewish name.

Yehudi Mosowitz scrimps and saves and can finally emigrate to America. His friends advise him to change his name so he can fit in better, and work with him on a classic "American name". When he gets to Ellis Island the immigration officer asks him his name and he says in Yiddish "Shoyn fargessen!" (I've forgotten).

The immigration officer makes a note and says "Right, Sean Ferguson."

I vetoed all Russian names in honor of my grandparents who had to flee progroms.

We both vetoed a bunch of names! Naming our children was extremely difficult for us! They wound up with unusual first names and traditional middle names.

He vetoed:
Grace
Helena
Katherine (as a first name)
Jane (as a first name)
Anna
Joseph
Matthew
Daniel
Lucas

I vetoed:
Lily
Piper
Harper
Sophia
Olivia
Ava
Avery
Nathan
Alexander (as a first name)
Zachary
Noah
Louis
Graham (as a first name)
Bradley
Brady
Cooper

Yes, I vetoed more names than he did, and I was more difficult than he was.

Daisy. DH hates flower names.

I love that name! But we’re Jewish and have laughed at so many Jewish Ryan’s that we couldn’t.

Anonymous wrote:I have love the name Jennie all my life. Unfortunately DH’s last name starts with “Jeni” so it was way too rhyming and awful.

Strangely, my son’s nickname on his ball team is Jennie!

Taking my husband’s last name (Taylor) ruined a lot of my favorite name choices too. No Elizabeth, Kelly, Andie. Even names like Tara and Tamara sound goofy with Taylor.

DH loved the old Andy Griffith Show growing up - like he can still recite dialogue - and he wanted to name our son Opie.

I vetoed it.

Farrah. My DH and I are middle eastern (he is fluent and I am not) and wanted Arabic names that worked well in the US .. well turns out fa’ara is rat in Arabic and it reminded him too much of Farrah. Glad we didn’t use it bc I like our DD’s name much better.

I thin I would have vetoed Donna, and yet when I hear it now I think it sounds cute.
