The, “ridiculous reason” she might not want to go to UVA is perhaps her area of academic interest is fairly weak or not available at UVA. We all know know UVA is not a string STEM school.

Wisconsin-Madison is the first school that comes to mind that is very close to UNC. My cousin’s daughter was denied at UNC and ended up in Madison after being suggested to apply there for the similarity and she LOVED it. She just graduated and is staying there.
You went to UNC, not UVA. So you're really in no position to compare "vibes" between the two schools. You can only know what you know, not what you don't know and haven't experienced.

Virginia Tech was a hard admit this year, so not sure that's guaranteed either.
They should add JMU to the list.

PP here. Right. I didn't see the SAT score. OP's kid has zero chance at UNC and not much of a chance at UVA either, in state legacy or otherwise.
I'd go for UW-Madison.
DS had significantly higher stats and EC awards and was rejected at both. And rejected at UT-Austin. But in at Wisconsin, Georgia, and Michigan.

You know the GPA is completely school dependent, right? UVA wants to see a kid at the top of their class with good grades in the most rigorous courses. That various from school to school. Also, the SCHEV stats are senior year GPA - kids taking a ton of AP see their GPAs jump significantly in junior year and again in senior year.
Also, anyone touring (virtually or physically) knows the UVA is every, every clear that kids should go test optional. The current SAT scores are inflated for that reason and have been for the last several years.
You can’t spell or write and you are wrongs: OP’s kid doesn’t have a good shot at UVA unless legacy kicks in. That is a fact

There is one school comparable to UNC: UVA. They are different, but.... relative to the other places cited (Madison, UTA, etc.), that's the match. If you are in-state UVA, it's a no brainer.
No way OP's kid gets into UNC OOS, in any case, with a 1380. Just ED UVA and pray.
