But if the kid is in 4th grade... shouldn't they already have a considerable amount of French? After 1st grade, it's still test in, right?

More white families moved out of DC to Silver Spring thereby increasing the number of white kids in SS schools, which has led to fewer families to want to flee those schools.

During Covid, many parents were just surviving (not thriving). And it took at toll on immersion interest.

I think it's a combination of things. People are worried about another shutdown, and that learning losses will be amplified by the second language. PP is also correct that more kids have access to dual immersion now so those kids aren't as likely to enter the lottery. The spots are also distributed more widely now that the sibling link has been weakened.

We were in the 300's for RCF when my daughter applied back in 2018. I don't know how high the wait list is these days, but a waitlist in the 300's is pretty impressive.

Possibly, but they have also opened two-way immersion schools that don't require a lottery, so fewer families in the running.

I think siblings have a set number of spots--so if there are a lot of siblings, there is a lottery among them to see who gets those spots, and everyone else is part of the "regular" lottery for the other spots.

Those who have won a spot via lottery have 5 days to accept. Then they start going to the waitlist.

They're not very quick about sending out second-round invitations, from my experience. They seem to send those out closer to the end of summer. Sucks I know, but just so you know that checking your email every minute in case the invitation comes in might only serve to drive you crazy

My kid was about #5 on the list when she got in. It wasn't immediately after the response deadline, but just a couple days later. So if people have 5 days to accept, the next invitations might go out in 8 days. I think they tell you there's hope if you're in the top 30 but not otherwise.
