Isn’t the little prince for much older children?

My 4 year old has recently started “reading” the society of substitutes books. He is a goofy kid and finds them hilarious.

Also, don't worry so much about "bored." I'd tell my kid, "great, then you can just lay back in bed and close your eyes and relax." Inevitably they'd get into the story.

I did not, but we talked about it, especially the "darky" language. My kids might have been a little older when we read that one. Of course it also would have been very easy to skip that chapter if one preferred not to talk about that.

We also talked about Ma's racist talk about Indians and why the Ingalls family left their farm in Indian territory.



Agree, that's why these are wonderful for read aloud time.
You can talk about why those things wouldn't fly today. Otherwise it's hard to teach those things organically.

Definitely not Benedict Society until at least 8, preferably older. Very dark.

Zoey and sassafrass has been mentioned, but I would also add Mia Mayhem and Freddy’s Amazing Bakery series

My 5yo son loved reading The Hobbit aloud, but lost momentum on both redwall and Harry Potter, which I thought would be good next steps
