At our high school there are definitely cut times for indoor and outdoor track. Kids who can't make the cuts can be on the "practice squad" but don't compete at meets...so I guess it depends on what no cut means to you....

This is absolutely not true. Most FCPS high schools have standards to make the track team. I'm in Western FFX county
At DDs school, XC and track are no-cut, but there are minimum standards to letter. There are a lot of non-varsity participants.
A lot of people are saying swim is no-cut. That is definitely not the case for our team.

(2) it can be very school specific particularly for girls. Certain teams may just have a tough time getting kids so they will keep almost anyone who tries out. Softball and Girls Lacrosse and even Soccer Cher may be packed at some schools and go begging at others.
(3) 9th grade teams in many sports at many schools may not have a cut. They may only play a couple of other schools but it often is done so kids can try a sport. Also, in many sports, particularly for guys, coaches (and schools) want to keep kids involved who have not yet hit growth spurts. For the girls - 9th graders are often the same size as seniors. For the guys that is pretty rare.
Eastern Fairfax here and swim has cuts. They don’t have the lanes to accommodate everyone who wants to be on the team. Cross country is no cut, football has only a few cuts and cheer has no cuts

This varies, as you see from the responses. IME, football, cross country, swim, wrestling, track are non cut. I have also seen lacrosse be non-cut for a different team level (i.e., separate team for "green" players).
Like a PP said, this doesn't mean that everyone gets to participate in an actual meet/event. Some schools will enter different levels of meets, though. For example, the fast swimmers will be in a competitive meet, while the slower ones will be entered in a separate, less competitive meet. Often this can depend on numbers (both at the school and participation level at other schools that match up) and coaching staff available.

OP, walk into the Activities Office and ask. It can really vary by year. And it can be very fluid. Sport X had an unexpected number turn out, Sport Y needs recruits.

Our HS cut for crew last spring. This area is nothing like what I grew up in and I went to a large HS in New England. It’s is crazy. Many FCPS fall sports made cuts yesterday. Some really disappointed kids. Who were really good at the sport.Anonymous wrote:Crew?

OP if you want a guarantee that your kids will be able to play sports at the high school level your best bet is a small private. Even sports that were traditionally no-cut have become much more competitive.

They cut over a hundred kids each year. IT's very hard to make the teams in this area.
