Some of the kids were filling their time with meanness and bullying, in addition to being totally unmotivated to work (despite all the marketing from the school about its approach to learning). The school is so worried about its branding and reputation that they don't want to run right at the hard stuff. Super sad.

So you might want to pose the issue to school and get a reality check. Even reliable kids” sense of these kind of things can be wildly off without them making things up.
This is OP. Thank you. I thought this initially too but the class is small enough that they all know each other’s grades and show one another their papers/scores. Ordinarily, grade/performance wise my kid is probably a strong 8 on a scale of 1-10 when he was in public. Here he is easily a 10 and I don’t think he should be honestly.

Has nothing to do with publics. If you prefer private, good. If one prefers public, good.
There are low class at both. Not all privates are better than public and no all publics are better than private.
