+1 I am not inbound for Lafayette or Shepherd, but I really hope that they pull them out of Deal/J-R together and route to a Ward 4 middle/high school path. It would immediately create another viable neighborhood school and fix Ward 3 overcrowding. It has to be better to have everyone in the city fighting over two neighborhood high schools than over one!
Nobody cares what you think unless you have kids there, and you have no business opining on something that does not effect you. This is a fantasy that keeps getting thrown out there by the social justice warrior crowd on here, so please move on. Fixing ETOP high schools shouldn’t fall on the backs of Shephard Park/CC kids.
If you think creating a second desirable by-right high school in DC only effects the parents of the first kids to be rerouted there, you're very shortsighted. Also, it's *Shepherd Park.
The new macarthur school will be 1000 students. Can't Lafayette + Shepherd get almost all the way there themselves?
Are you proposing rezoning the two easternmost elementary schools zoned for J-R to Macarthur, which basically as far West as you can go without falling into Virginia? If so, why?
No, they are proposing to rezone Lafayette and Shepherd to Wells/Coolidge instead of opening MacArthur. But that ship has sailed...

This is kind of an odd one and I am a little uncertain of the responses I'll get here.
He has gone to one of the traditional DCPS middle schools where he's one of very few white kids and is actually quite happy.
He might just want to continue on to the local high school.
My question for you all is WHAT WILL HE MISS by not going to Jackson Reed for High School? How won't he be ready for college?
Generally, this is a kid who cares about grades and reads a lot and is a quick study at math. He doesn't have to try very hard, but he also as I mentioned typically aces tests. English tests he's off the charts and on math, not quite, but way above grade level.
I'm happy to scroll through the opinions for good information. Thanks for your thoughts!

It couldn't possibly and is enormously tone deaf. There are so many kids who are promoted year after year that are not proficient in either math or ELA, what could possibly be done at the high school level that would "move the needle?" What even is the needle? DCPS-XQ is far worse than "Alice Deal For All" which was a failed campaign promise; this stupid XQ BS actually has money being thrown at it.

- advanced math. A Calculus track won’t even be in the cards.
- Stable teaching staff. Teacher turnover rate at neighborhood schools can be atrocious. This is a HUGE factor. This means programs that a teacher loved and wanted to grow could just disappear when they leave. This also means less experienced teachers (generally) and the possibility of long term subs “teaching” your kid.
- AP preparation
- Stable admin. Turnover is high, so school culture is difficult to improve or even maintain year to year. This also means lots of random “initiatives” each year that don’t do much to improve student outcomes.
DCPS teacher here seconding the above!
Are you MS or HS teachers?

In DCPS? Walls and McKinley. I’m sure there are privates and charters too.
