District 1 - Guan
District 3 - Yang
District 5 - Iannaco
At Large - Fryar

There are other, more sane options to vote for if you are against the incumbents.

(and Joftus? After the 2M+ Kid Museum fiasco? Please. No joking around.)

The real question is District 1 - Jay Guan vs Grace Rivera-Oven?

Thoughts?

You know Fryar is just as crazy as Dawn, right? They’re even running their campaigns together as a team.

Actually, I'd be okay with either Fryar or Dawn as long as it's not Silvestre. This board has been the worst the county has seen in the past 20 years and that's saying a lot.

Putting certifiably crazy people in is not the correct choice. Both Dawn and Fryar are unacceptable choices. Pretty much everyone knows this at this point.

Fryar is a nut job Republican. He and his wife ran as Republicans for local office in Hartford, CT (where they lived until recently) and lost. And the Hartford BOE and lost.

I prefer mainstream candidates and will stick with the Apple ballot.

Silvestre has been one of the few good board members. I'm not voting to replace her.

The board is s so popular with the mainstream that there's no chance they won't win re-election.

Totally. Quit her job at Magruder mid year to run for office in the name of supporting students. No thank you.

Yang sounds so dedicated Totally got my vote.

lol. Troll.

Too many BoE members are out-of-touch with reality, either being retired or SAHPs. We should only be electing working parents to the BoE, but we obvious have a problem with adverse selection due to the significant time demands and low pay for being a board member.

How are SAHPs out of touch with reality? I personally spend lots of time with my and other actual children and volunteer regularly in the schools. Your random job that has nothing to do with education doesn’t really qualify you for a BOE position.

I agree and the person accusing others of trolling kind of seems like the real troll.

MCEA demanding no concurrent instruction meant kids in isolation or quarantine often had to go without instruction at all.

And the calendar changes that got rid of school days and switched others to half days.

And MCEA requiring a day off before virtual instruction, which meant a lot of kids missed more class when their schools closed. And this was probably why we didn’t have virtual days instead of snow days.

And yet they're still better than the alternatives that intend to rubber stamp whatever MCEA tells them to do. What a sad set of candidates we have.

I haven’t seen any evidence of that for the other BOE at large candidates.

Just look at who we have for options:

Giandomenico- Hasn't been able to articulate a single substantive policy position, nor has he been able to provide a substantive critique of any particular existing policy or past decision. Plus his kid isn't even in elementary school yet. There's no way he'd be willing and able to hold anyone in MCPS accountable, nor does he have any ideas of his own.

Silvestre- Admittedly, one of the least bad current members of the Board. But still a member of the Board that has failed to provide meaningful oversight to MCPS, Smith, and Mcknight. She had her chance and she failed.

Fryar- A bit odd, but a unique background and a clear willingness and ability to ask the hard questions that other BoE members wouldn't dare of MCPS administrators.

Under the current circumstances, where the BoE has a long history of simply rubber stamping whatever the Superintendent says, Fryar seems like the only choice.

I like this fiction about rubber stamping. Can you back that up with examples of when they should've opposed MCEA? For example, should they oppose annual cost of living increases for teachers or force them to work in unsafe conditions?
