My BIL goes by a nick name that comes from how SIL pronounced his name when she was young. When my DH was born (youngest of the 3) their parents picked a simple and straightforward name so there would be no nick naming.

I love Colie.

You can usually control nicknames for the first little bit of their life. Eventually friends may come up with nicknames you didn't love, but that is life. The sister will learn to say Colie. If everyone else is calling her Nicole, it will stick, probably.

I think Colie is pretty cute

DS, then 2, gave his sister a nickname before she was born. DH and I argued and agonized about her given name for months and finally agreed on a name. My son continued to call her by her nickname and now everyone does!

DD has had a running list of nicknames for DS practically since he was born. So far we have had:

Litmit, Judged, Little Wallers, Gretel (that one she called him for probably a couple of years, I'm sure the folks on the playground thought we were crazy) and most recently Nud (can't figure out how to add umlauts but rest assured the 'u' has them) and Gyub. These names have largely been used just at home though they do occasionally come out in public. But in no way is there any thought that my son will go by any of these names permanently!

Same! My kids just call my baby "B". They don't even say "baby", just the first letter. And it's not the first letter of her name! B is now 14 months old and pretty much gets called B by everyone. Grandparents picked it up too. Guess I should have named her Beatrice nn Bea.

My grandfather's 7 brothers and sisters all had nicknames given to them when they were little and they stuck with them for 80 plus years. These were my great aunt and uncles and I was convinced when I was younger that I had 14 of them because everybody called them by two different names. My dad would call my uncle Hank and my grandpa would call him Fred. I was sooooo confused.

It’s not forever.

Something similar happened to us! Instead of saying the first two syllabus, DS said the last two of his baby sister's name! But, we loved the unusual nick name!

Same! I actually had a similar situation in my family where it was important that the name be pronounceable in several languages.

I was shaking my head and wondering in what universe does Clyde sound good in Spanish???

I think Colie is adorable. Someday you'll look back at this time and think of it as a cute phase. Or, she'll be Colie for life. We can't control everything!
