OP said he took no advanced classes.

Bumping this and would be interested in more anecdotes coming from public schools with this GPA.

Similar profile (from strong public school) with no hooks and not URM. Got into Indiana, CU Boulder, Arizona, Arizona State, Iowa, UNH, Col State/Fort Collins, Loyola Chicago, and Maine. WL at Syracuse and UVM. Into Penn as 2+2 (ie 'commonwealth campus' for first two yrs). Rejected from Wisconsin. At IU and loving it.

PP -- sorry, not enough coffee yet. That's Penn State not Penn above, of course. Also, this was one year ago (ie the 2020-21 admissions cycle).

What did your DS choose? None of the above are in the south

Norfolk State, Virginia State, Old Dominion, CNU, JMU, Virginia Union and Radford. Good Luck, there's a school for your DC.

JMU. Probably not.

JMU average gpa is 3.5
acceptance rate is 80%
So yes.

Be wary of relying on that 80% stat. JMU started accepting the common app this past year and had a 44% increase in applicants so that acceptance rate will go down. Might still be an option for OP's kid but keep an eye on the most recent data.

Congrats to your DS on crafting a realistic list - sharing it here is helpful for parents with kids in similar situations. GL in college!
