PP here, and also a single woman homeowner. Some of you watch too much lifetime dramas. The paranoia is seriously odd.

Also hate to break it to you, but if someone wants to rape you, they'll just smash a window and hold a gun to your head. New locks don't do jack shiat.

Day two. We were still moving in and DH locked the only set of keys we had inside the house. Whomp, whomp. Otherwise, I probably would have never changed them.

We waited until the contractors were done working inside the house.

Day 1.

Lots of very trusting folks in this thread. It costs so little to do, and there are so many locksmiths who can come quickly to do it. Doesn't matter if the prior owners were sketchy or not; it's about not knowing who has the keys. I have always done it before moving anything into the new house.

Immediately, because the previous owners of our house had been foreclosed upon and had already returned twice during the sale/contingency period to take items from the house that should have been part of the sale.

I bought new construction so never.

Partly for safety; partly so they would all be keyed the same; partly because the old locks and knobs were unattractive.

It has been two years and we haven’t changed them. We talked to two locksmiths and two contractors and they all said we would need to buy a new door. The door is a very odd shape so it would have to be custom or semi-custom and for a door of decent quality it would be 2K.

Fingers crossed an old key doesn’t make it unto the hands of a weirdo but frankly I’m more concerned about nuclear war. The odds of somebody breaking in and doing something bad are tiny.

Oh- I forgot to add that I ordered them to match on build.com.

It was the easiest thing I ever for this house.

Did it the first day.

I counted the number of locks on the house three or four times. Because everyone in the neighborhood had a key (the owner was older and needed help) I knew immediately I needed to change the locks.

It’s not that expensive. You don’t need the most expensive lock set and you can get all of the keys to match all at once.

I called my friend, a locksmith, about 3-4 days after we closed. He was on vacation, so we scheduled when he got back. It was about 2 weeks before it was done. We contributed to their family's vacation fund for the next vacation.

It was something that was important to do, but I didn't feel the urgency to get it done on day 1.
