I need help in submitting the sample work. I can think of art work and story sample. If you have any other ideas, can u please post it?

Thanks for the response. Is it okay to write in letter why GBRS is low as per my perception? like one of her teacher moved to different city and hence AART teacher didnot take any feedback from 1st grade teacher. etc.

I don't have a letter for you, PP. But if English is not your native language and you are not comfortable with it, you should mention that in the letter. It will help them understand why the letter sounds the way it does if it happens to be awkwardly worded. Also, it will help you DC. The committee should get that it's harder for kids that come form non-English speaking homes to do as well in school, where English is important. It shows that your DC has overcome an extra obstacle.

I am not good at english and my AART teacher suggested to write a heartfelt letter to draw the attention to the test scores. Can anybody send me a sample letter?

The idea about getting a return receipt is good. I've heard that if it isn't received, too bad--unless you can "prove" they received it. There is too much at stake, I'd FEDEx so you can mail the day before and make sure everything is accurate/error-free.

PP, we're in the same boat. Our school doesn't have Local Level IV and I don't think we have Level III either.

Unfortunately, our school doesn't have Local Level IV. I wish they did because the stakes wouldn't be so high. Conceivably, my "marginal" child could be placed in a Level IV class if they had it. I talked to the AART and she could not even assure me that my DC will get Level 3 services!!! They are apparently very limited at our school. So it's kind of all or nothing for my DC, which freaks me out a little. If I could get DC into a Local Level IV classroom, I might not be trying to "push" (as many here would say) my 97% child into the GT center. It's strange how you can miss a few questions or be one percentile below and all of a sudden you are entitled to NO services -- when you are 99th percentile in some areas. It doesn't make sense to me.

Good suggestion about return receipt requested, though. I will do that.

my HS teacher used to say, we're all talented, but not talented in all areas, or something like that.

Our report states that the FSIQ alone doesn't provide a good example of the whole picture because some of the subtest scores are quite different. The tester (at GM) said she doesn't feel like my DD has a LD because her few "lower" subtest scores still fall in a Average or High Average range. Most of her scores are in the Superior and Very Superior range. So it really helps to see all the subtests. Would it be helpful for the appeal if I wrote a summary and included it as a cover letter for the report in case they don't read the whole report?

Great to hear that somebody else got in with something somewhat similar scores and GBRS. I won't hold my breath on the appeal, just 'cause, but the WISC was a great confirmation. My DD is one of those kids who got one component above the cut-off score for the screening pool. A little part of me started to wonder if that one score wasn't just a fluke. (I wonder if the committee didn't have the same thoughts.) But now *I* know--my DD is definitely gifted at least in several areas, but (like many people) she has really strong areas and not so strong areas. Thanks for the info!

So folks generally submit the whole report, right? There is a lot of really good information in there. Some of her scores are really high and some not so much. It is really interesting.

Definetely submit the whole report--otherwise, they may think you've selective omitted something or worse (hiding). My DD had two areas really high (138 & 140) some in in 110 range--still got in. Plus, GBRS was 8.

I am cycnical that they actually read these. I'll be thtey only look at the page with the scores. At this point, I don't feel like FCPS cares at all about my child, which is a bummer.

My guess is that for the initial selection, they can not read everyone...assuming 20 kids per school, with 141 schools that would be about 2800 applications...

Some children are probably accepted without review (good test scores and GBRS), and some are probably rejected out of hand (lower scores and lower GBRS).

So, that probably reduces the number of files that require review to under 1000.

In the appeals process, they can look at things in more detail, as there are fewer appeals (usually about 200).

Our AART said to submit the whole report. As I understand her, you still get 5 pages or whatever. The WISC counts as one, not 5 even though it is about 5 pages long.
